+--| Moving on from EFF |-----------------------------------------------------+

It was way back in the year 2000 that I left a stable job at an Australian
commercial law firm, because I wanted to strike out alone and specialize
in an area that I couldn't at my old firm. I started up my own boutique IT
law firm, while simultaneously also managing an IT consultancy that I had
started as a side gig a couple of years earlier. The two businesses
together immediately became my full-time job, even though I had no
certainty that I could make a living out of either of them. As it turned
out, it was the right move for me to have made, and the law practice is
still going strong today under management of my former staff lawyer,
although no longer specialising in IT.

History repeats itself as I leave EFF today to concentrate full-time on my
startup nonprofit, Prostasia Foundation. In my blog post announcing the
formation of Prostasia I explained that I would be reducing my hours along
with some of my work areas at EFF, to devote 25% of my time to Prostasia.
A couple of months down the track, Prostasia has received approval to
operate as a s.501(c)(3) nonprofit, and it has become clear that it will
need more attention to get to the next level. For such a niche nonprofit,
crowdfunding isn't going to raise the funds it needs; I'm going to need to
approach larger donors and foundations individually. On top of the
organization's substantive work and the development of its website,
Prostasia is going to take more than 25% of my time for the next little
while.

Child protection is a challenging area to move into, but I remain
convinced that Prostasia brings an important and neglected approach to
this topic. Thankfully, its backers and advisors are as passionate about
it as I am, and it has been gratifying to receive their support and
admiration for the initiative that I am taking. Although I'm also proud of
the work that I've done at EFF, there are a lot of people working on
digital rights issues, but none specializing in its intersections with
child protection. Since child protection is truly the canary in the coal
mine for digital rights, and for civil rights more broadly, this is a
vital niche to fill for both communities. It also seems like it has the
potential to take off; as a (rough and possibly inaccurate) metric of
this, everything I've ever written about this topic on Medium has garnered
views that are one or two orders of magnitude higher than any articles
I've written on EFF's topics there.

So, we'll see how this pans out. I'm quietly confident, but I could use
some good wishes (and donations to our crowdfunding campaign!). Please be
sure to follow Prostasia's progress on Twitter at @ProstasiaInc.
